The Forgotten Magic of Platonic Touch: Why We Need to Bring Back the Hug

This post steps away from my usual style, but it is about something I feel incredibly strongly about.

When you look around at the people in your life, you can probably spot the differences instantly. There are those who are wonderful, instinctive huggers—people whose presence immediately puts you at ease. Then, there are others who are naturally more reserved.

In our modern world, that reservation is completely understandable. We live in a society that sells sex on almost every advertisement and screen. Because media and marketing have hyper-sexualised physical contact, our collective radar has been warped. It is no wonder that some people worry a simple, caring gesture might be misunderstood as a sexual overture rather than what it truly is: pure, platonic support.

Yet, by allowing that fear to completely dictate our interactions, we have slowly and quietly forgotten the art of platonic touch. Somewhere along the line, we categorised physical affection as something reserved almost exclusively for romantic partners or small children. In doing so, we’ve starved ourselves of a vital biological nutrient.

To understand just how essential this nutrient is, we only have to look back to the very beginning of life. Breastfeeding is the earliest, most foundational touch we experience. The simple, skin-to-skin act of a mother nursing her child immediately engages the parasympathetic nervous system for both mother and baby. It forces two bodies to slow down, drop their guard, and switch on their "rest and digest" networks simultaneously. This primal tactile communication creates an instinctual sense of safety, locking mother and baby into a profound, lifelong bond.

If you step into an alternative or spiritual community space, you will often notice a stark contrast to mainstream society. The community tends to be beautifully, unapologetically "touchy-feely." We meet and greet with warm hugs, a comforting hand on a shoulder, or a reassuring squeeze of the arm. There is an intuitive understanding that human energy changes and synchronises when we connect physically.

But outside of these intentional spaces, a deep "skin hunger" persists. Do you hug your family when you see them? Do you greet your closest friends hello and goodbye with physical affection, or has it dwindled into a casual wave?

1. Now for the science bit: Why and how our incredible bodies react to soothing physical touch.

In a beautiful shift in energy, what we experience as a deep emotional exhale during a massage, a hug, or a hands-on healing session is actually our biology responding to a built-in communication network. When we share safe, deliberate, comforting touch, we are essentially speaking to the body in its oldest, most native language.

We actually have a dedicated set of nerves built purely for emotional connection. These are called C-tactile fibers, and they are buried deeply in our skin [3].

Unlike the nerves that tell your brain "ouch, that pan is hot" or "this fabric feels rough," these fibers ignore texture and sharp changes entirely. Instead, they are tuned exclusively to slow, gentle, warm strokes—exactly the kind of touch you experience during massage, comforting hand-holding, or a reassuring hug [1, 3].

           ▼

[Vagus Nerve Steps on the Brake] ──► Calms the nervous system down.

When someone places a gentle hand on you, these nerves send an immediate signal straight to a part of the brain called the "insula"

[1]. The insula doesn't care about the physics of the touch; it processes how you "feel" inside your own skin. It instantly translates that physical pressure into a profound sense of emotional safety, body awareness, and comfort [1].

2. Dropping the Anchor: The Vagus Nerve

Once your brain gets that "all safe" signal, it taps your body's main relaxation highway: the vagus nerve [4].

Think of the vagus nerve as your body's built-in brake pedal. When life gets stressful, our sympathetic nervous system pins the accelerator down, locking us into a high-alert "fight-or-flight" mode. Deliberate, soothing touch forces the vagus nerve to step on the brakes, instantly activating our parasympathetic nervous system (our "rest, digest, and heal" network) [1, 4].

Clinical studies tracking heart rates show that during hands-on therapy, your heart rate variability improves [6]. That's just a scientific way of saying your heart relaxes, your blood pressure drops, and your body finally gets the green light to stop stressing and start repairing itself.

 3. The Brain's Chemical Cocktail

As your nervous system settles down, your brain and pituitary gland teams up to completely rewrite your internal chemistry [1, 3]. They stop pumping out stress chemicals and open up the taps on a deeply soothing

Within moments of a soothing touch or hands-on session, this chemical shift forcefully drives down your cortisol (the main stress hormone) [2]. It is a literal biological reset button for physical anxiety.

 4. What the Science Says About Energy Healing

Because these pathways are so hardwired into us, researchers have spent a lot of time studying what happens during energy-based therapies like "Reiki" and "Therapeutic Touch" [4].

Melting Away Anxiety: A clinical trial investigating Therapeutic Touch—where a practitioner gently uses their hands on or just above the body to smooth out tension—showed a massive, undeniable drop in anxiety levels [2]. The physical and energetic presence of the practitioner gave the brain the exact signals it needed to switch off the panic button.

Outperforming the Placebo:

A comprehensive review of medical literature on Reiki (the traditional Japanese art of hands-on healing) found that it consistently beats placebos when it comes to reducing chronic pain, clearing away stress, and soothing severe anxiety [4].

The science wraps it up beautifully: whether you call it shifting energy, balancing the biofield, or just a really good massage, working intentionally with hands-on touch bypasses our busy, anxious minds [4]. It speaks directly to our nervous system, clearing away the static of the modern world so our bodies can do what they do best—heal [3].

Let’s meet each other with open arms, anchor our support with a physical presence, and remind our loved ones—and our own nervous systems—that we are safe, connected, cared for and profoundly human.

The Tribal Fire: Why Genuine Pagan and Spiritual Community is a Lifeline

In the natural world, community isn’t a luxury or a social preference. It is a biological imperative. For our ancestors, staying with the tribe was quite literally the difference between living and dying. The wild teaches us that absolute isolation is dangerous; we survive by watching each other’s backs, sharing the harvest, and keeping the fire lit together.

This danger isn't just physical—it is spiritual. Isolation is a threat to the soul. We know that infants cannot survive, let alone thrive, without touch and human interaction. Our spirits are no different. We do not grow in a vacuum; we thrive on love, physical presence, tactile connection, and community.

Yet, in the modern world, a quiet isolation has crept in. For many Pagan and spiritual practitioners, the vibrant communities that used to gather under the stars or in local spaces have migrated online. While the internet has connected us across miles, it has also left many feeling stranded behind screens, starved of the genuine, face-to-face warmth we need to truly live.

We don’t just need digital connections. We need a real, living tribe where we can show up exactly as we are.

A Sanctuary for the Authentic Self

One of the most beautiful aspects of an earth-centred path is its defiance of the mundane status quo. Many in our community express their inner world through alternative clothing, unique adornments, tattoos and a style that reflects the earth, the ancient past, or the ethereal.

In everyday society, dressing or thinking differently can draw stares, judgement, or endless, wearying questions. But a true spiritual community acts as a sanctuary. It is a place where you don’t have to tone yourself down, hide your symbols, or apologise for your aesthetic.

An authentic community must be radically inclusive, accepting, and supportive. It should be a space where:-

You are safe, seen, and included:

A place where you can shed your protective armour, feel the comfort of shared presence, and simply breathe.

You have significance:

You aren’t just a number in a crowd or an anonymous profile on a screen. Your presence matters, your absence is felt, and your voice carries weight.

Diversity is celebrated:

Understanding that nature thrives on variance, not uniformity. You fit automatically, without having to audition or pass a conformity test. You don't have to believe; you just have to be.

What We Bring to the Table: The Wealth of Creative Skills

When a spiritual community gathers in person, it quickly becomes clear that we are not just a group of individuals—we are a fully functioning village. The sheer volume of hands-on, creative, and practical skills within our community is staggering.

We don't just talk about nature; we live in conversation with it. To the collective table, our tribe brings:

The Grounded Spirits:

Those who hold a deep, instinctual spirit that connects directly to the land. Their energy is anchored in the ancient places—the sweeping chalk paths of the Sussex Downland and the deep, silent shadows of the old woodlands left behind from the great forest.

They bring the grounding presence of the places where our ancestors walked, lived, and loved, acting as stabilisers who calm the chaos of modern life.

The Keepers of the Soil

Gardeners, foragers, and herbalists who understand the rhythm of the seasons and how to grow life from the earth.

The Alchemists & Healers

Creators who craft their own oils, lotions, remedies, and incense, keeping ancient practical wisdom and healing traditions alive.

The Artisans & Bards:

Artists, musicians, poets, and crafters who bring beauty, song, and tangible magic into the physical realm.

Within this electric community, you will also find people with deep experience of diverse Pagan paths. Having this spectrum of backgrounds under one canopy brings a vast wealth of unique perspective. It provides us with the collective knowledge and practical skills that allow us to safely explore other spiritual avenues, expanding our own personal horizons through trusted, shared wisdom.

When we meet in the flesh, these skills and traditions cease to be solitary practices. They become shared resources. We teach each other, steady each other, and build a localised ecosystem of mutual support.

Learning from  Elders: The Keepers of Wisdom

An online search bar can give you a database of facts, but it can never give you wisdom. One of the greatest tragedies of our digital isolation is that we have become separated from our community elders.

Within our real-life circles sit the elders in wisdom—those who learned their magic long before there were screens, algorithms, or Google. They acquired their craft the old way: through decades of dedicated, hands-on skills, deep study, and direct relationship with the living world. They have walked the paths that others have yet to tread, and they have the mud on their boots to prove it. When we gather in person, we are privileged to learn from them and tap into a vast amount of accumulated knowledge.

By bringing our elders back to our circles, we ensure that the lineage of our practices isn't lost to the fleeting trends of the internet. We sit, we learn, we practice and we carry the flame forward.

The Sensory Magic of Gathering: Moots, Music, and Ritual

What does it actually feel like when the tribe reunites? It feels like coming home to a lineage of shared warmth. True community is found when we step away from the digital grid and step into the circle of a local **moot** or outdoor gathering.

It is the irreplaceable experience of:

 The Campfire and Collective Reflection:

Sitting shoulder-to-shoulder around a living flame, watching the sparks rise into the night sky, and sharing moments of quiet, collective reflection that ground us in the present moment.

 Storytelling and Acoustic Music:

The ancient art of passing down wisdom through spoken word, accompanied by the raw, honest sound of acoustic music. No speakers, no screens—just voices, drums, and strings vibrating in the open air.

 Open Ritual:

Standing together in a circle, raising energy as one, and honouring the tides of the earth through shared ritual that welcomes everyone exactly as they are..

Revelling in the Elements

Most of all, gathering in person allows us to share those fleeting, breathtaking moments of magic that the digital world completely misses. It is the joy of revelling in the elements of nature together—not just observing them, but fully experiencing them as a collective.

Together, we get to share the special, quiet micro-moments that anchor us to the earth:

 * The sudden, iridescent light of a dragonfly cutting across the circle.

 * The gentle twist of a falling leaf landing softly between friends as the seasons shift.

 * The wild, electric energy of an invigorating rain storm that breaks over the woods, washing away the old and forcing us to huddle closer together, laughing and alive beneath the canopy.

In these moments, the loneliness of modern life completely dissolves. We are no longer isolated practitioners working in the dark; we are a collective voice, experiencing the living spirit of the land in real-time.

 The Strength of the Tribe

When we step out of the isolation of online forums and into the warmth of physical circles, the benefits to our well-being are immediate:

An Antidote to Loneliness:

Knowing there are others who share your reverence for the earth dissolves the exhausting feeling of being the "odd one out" in a mundane world.

Increased Confidence:

Being witnessed, valued, and accepted by your peers validates your path and empowers you to stand taller in your everyday life.

A Lifeline in Times of Trouble:

Just like a community in the wild, a real-life tribe steps in when life gets heavy. Whether it’s practical help during a crisis or emotional anchoring during a storm, a supportive community ensures no one faces the dark alone.

Tending the Flame

This is a call to all those who are still out there searching. To all the Pagan and spiritual people who are looking for their tribe, searching for genuine connection, and yearning for a space of shared wonder, healing, and magic: your people are out there, and they are looking for you, too.

Let’s commit to moving beyond the digital grid. Let’s gather at the local moots, under the open sky, in village halls, homes and around actual campfires. Let’s bring our grounding energy, our roots, our acoustic music, our alternative clothes, and our wildest selves to the table. Let’s reclaim the love, the touch, the storytelling, and the collective presence that keep us alive, inspired, and whole.
